Low Profile Facebook Account - MacTalk 2013-05-01
============================
1. What is Facebook?
Social media, since 2004
You must register and then create a profile
You can join common interest groups
You can follow people or companies
You can post own thoughts/ events/ etc..

Facebook has over 1 billion active users ** (or so they claim)
Entertainment Weekly included the site on its end-of-the-decade "best-of" list, saying,
"How on earth did we stalk our exes, remember our co-workers' birthdays, bug our friends,
and play a rousing game of Scrabulous before Facebook?"
Critics, such as Facebook Detox,[15] state that Facebook has turned into a national obsession in the United States,
resulting in vast amounts of time lost and encouraging narcissism.
41.6% of US population has Facebook account

Examples of types of posts, groups, causes (Sack Alan Jones) https://www.facebook.com/SackAlanJones

2. What is all the fuss about?
**Privacy (this link is too long to type)
Your info
https://www.facebook.com/blog/blog.php?post=413846952130
Control Your Information: Anywhere,  Anytime, by Michael Eyal Sharon on Thursday,  August 5,  2010 at 6:02am,
You are in control of how you connect and share on Facebook. Recently,  many of you said you wanted more streamlined controls,
so we made a number of changes to provide them. As of today,  you can use these controls no matter where you are,
what kind of device you have access to,  or when you want to make a decision about your information.
We receive information about you from your friends and others,  such as when they upload your contact information,
post a photo of you,  tag you in a photo or ..........

Risks you face when you use Facebook.
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-top-4-risks-you-face-when-you-use-facebook/
**One great danger is if you say something .... but forget who is reading - boss, relative, and remember that these posts
may stay on Facebook "forever". (Term of service state that Facebook "owns" your data.
Even if you delete it it will still be stored in their data banks.
**Facebook has been known to either deliberately or accidentally allow private info to get out - causing embarrassment,
and potentially contributing to identity theft.
** For the unwary there is the potential for stranger danger.
**
Facebook has been known to become an Addiction
** Facebook is willing to use your personal info to advertise to friends and has been known to send out spam requests.

Its important to be aware of all this and take steps

3. What info to put in? (a quick Google  using "what information not to put on facebook" shows

Tradeoff: low profile vs all in
**Low profile -> less risk
Here's your step-by-step guide to Facebooking on the down-low:,
a)Set your profile visibility to Only Friends (the narrowest possible setting) on the Privacy Settings > Profile page.,
b)You may also want to delete personal info from your profile,  using the Edit My Profile link on your Profile page,  if you've entered any.
The only info you can't erase from your profile is your name. Everything else—your hometown,  your birthday,  even your gender—is optional.,
c)Set Search Visibility to Only Friends (the narrowest possible setting) on the Privacy Settings > Search page. (This will also cause the Public Search Listing checkbox to disappear, and remove your public search listing, if you had one.),
d)In the Search Result Content settings on the Privacy Settings > Search page,  deselect all of the checkboxes,  so people you aren't friends with can't contact you,  friend you,  or view your picture or Friends list.,
e)On the Privacy Settings > News Feed and Wall page,  deselect all checkboxes under "Actions Visible to Friends.", On the Applications page,  deauthorize all applications.,
f)Leave any networks you've joined. You can do this by visiting the Settings > Account Settings > Networks page.
**All in -> more popular, easier to find,
If you like you could include all sorts of information and set lots of things to "public" and "everyone" but you need to be prepared for the consequences.
Would you keep the lights on and the blinds drawn ALL THE TIME???

4. Privacy settings (Click on cog wheel)
https://www.facebook.com/help/privacy this page is well worth the read
Facebook by default has almost everything set to open.
The company is constantly adding new settings - with the default set open.
13 Million Facebook Users Haven't Touched Their Privacy Settings
(this page sets out many of the current settings in Pictorial "info-graphic" form.)

IT'S OFFICIAL: Telstra to bring iPhone to Australia on July 11th

http://apcmag.com/telstra_iphone.htm

Telstra will join the iPhone party on July 11th, and they've beaten Optus and Vodafone to the punch with their pricing announcement.

Telstra has finally joined the group of official Australian iPhone sellers by announcing they'll also be bringing the iPhone to market on July 11th - and in a first (not often seen from Telstra) they've actually announced some pricing detail too.

The basic Next G iPhone 3G plans start at $30/month with an upfront cost of $279 for the 8GB model and $399 for the 16GB model. On a more expensive $80/month the 8GB iPhone is free, and on a $100/month plan the 16GB iPhone is free.

It's not clear from the press release (we've placed a call to Telstra) how much talk time, SMS or data is included with any of the plans, however Telstra has said that all plans include free Wi-Fi access at Telstra hotspots and require a 24-month contract.

    not sure nothing official yet.
    Optus, ( http://www.optusiphone.com.au/home.aspx )
    Vodafone, ( http://store.vodafone.com.au/iphone/?s_kwcid

   • Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update released May 28th 420Mb
    (Needs 10.5.2)
   • Mac OS X 10.5.3 Combo Update is 536Mb (Needs 10.5)

updates to the meeting for the "bandwidth challenged")

Power PC version , Intel version
      "05/28/2008 Security Update 2008-003
    is recommended for all users."

Main Talk:
    David Morrison: VOIP
; (Voice Over Internet Protocol)
    Introduction:
   • 40 years ago exchanges were digitised ..
this overcame signal degradation over distance.
   • Then came the internet ... digital packets of 250 bytes sent
    ... called packet switching
   • VIOP is digitised voice packets sent over the internet
   • Can be much cheaper
(25 - 50% cheaper to mobile phones and international)
   • VOIP needs at least 512k download speed
    but is better at1500k.
   • Drawbacks include "artifacts", echo, "break up"
    or dropped words.
•In a blackout (power failure) voip probably won't work.
Terry Wellard noted that exchanges gave good backup
systems but it's not clear that they back up data transfer.
    (Check with Telstra)
   How is it done:
   •Skype ( http://www.skype.com/intl/en/welcomeback/ )
    ( On Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype )
Skype is free for computer to computer
   •Skype Out ( http://www.skype.com/intl/en/features/)
Skype Out allows you to SMS as well as call and be
called from a mobile or a land line.
•SIP ( Session Initiation Protocol ) calls - free for internal,
    10 -18 cents nationwide
    (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_Initiation_Protocol)
You will need a SIP Phone provider
    (here is an example listing)
      voip-providers-australia/)
•Analog Telephone Adapter or a VOIP ADSL router
    (Wikipedia) (Some Reviews)
Examples include "Engin" box or the
    "Billion ADSL VOIP Router",
this service will need a VOIP provider on top of your
    ADSL provider.
The analog box (eg Engin) is tied to a provider
but is portable, it works from any ADSL network
connection. A good option is to use this setup
with a chordless phone. Example providers are:
    MyNetPhone (https://www.mynetfone.com.au/)
    from 12c/call to 250 calls $19.95
    iiNet (http://www.iinet.net.au/products/voip/rates.html)
    $9.95/mth 15c/call
•Skype vs iChat ... similar except you can't dial out.
•David demonstrated using a mobile phone as a modem and
used it to make a voip call. The quality was outstanding!
   •Demo of X-Lite Soft Phone - (it crashed ...)
•Headphone quality is importand and a
    USB headphone works best
    $65 USB Headset. $60 - $80 for a USB phone.
•VOIP Phone Number: this is a special number and
can be set up as a local number anywhere in the world.
ie. overseas relations able to make a local call
    to you in Australia!
General Business
•General business was mostly further discussion of
    VOIP and ADSL.
•Possible topics for the future --
    Compression Technology, ISP Plans.
